Chapter 18
âWeâre on the side of the demons...weâre evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. Iâm surprised you didnât know that.â
-Colonel Saul Tigh, the Colonial Fleet (Battlestar Galactica)
Mount Paran Drive was in the northern edge of Atlanta, running up from north Buckhead across the city limit into Sandy Spring. It was a thickly wooded area of narrow, twisty side streets filled with large numbers of very large and expensive houses. It was where professional athletes, successful doctors, corporate presidents and a couple well-off rappers lived. Sometimes visiting actors rented there during filming at Pinewood Studios outside town. The point was that with that amount of money, it was understood you were buying some privacy. Even the neighborhood association web site said, âthis is not a social community.â The Atlanta PD or the DEA are a little less likely to blow in a door when the door itself cost thousands of dollars and the person behind it probably has a couple pet politicians.
Really, it wasnât the first time the rich side of town had been associated with doing dirt. The Black Mafia Family had a mansion up there in the late 1990s and early â00s where they ran their largest trap house; a place where they cut, repackaged and delivered bulk product and hid cash before starting a record company with the profits. Nice to see some shit never changes.
The lawyer we were looking for lived on one of the side streets in a great big medieval-styled stone mansion that looked like it should be hosting a Renaissance Faire if the front yard was bigger. The pool was nice too. Really, if the damn thing was near me in Tennessee, I might have said the hell with it and bought it. Of course then Iâd have to clean it, which means Iâd need people around.
The advance recon of the place had been yet another Morgan job. His faithful thrift store UPS uniform and his pockets full of electronic voodoo had sniffed the burglar alarms (one wire, one cellular), the window and door sensors for the alarm, the wireless cameras, the wi-fi password and so on. Knowing Morgan, he probably also cruised past a couple bored housewives in the area on some down-low dating app while he was in the neighborhood. I didnât mind. He had already done what I needed done, so any other fun he had was a bonus for him I didnât have to pay for. At hit time, we would put a small quadcopter drone up to confirm when the Porsche SUV left hauling the kids off to soccer or whatever and that the target would be home alone. We just had to get the drone down before we unwrapped our surprise for the event.
The, well, uh, call it a âWhitestone,â was an early-war US Army effort to prevent some types of IEDs from going off by jamming the cell phone signal to the homemade detonator.
